The voice · La voz
La Blanca is the house flamenca in the oldest sense: Spanish cypress, feather-light, strung low, with an attack that leaves the string almost before the thumb does. The sound is dry, bright and immediate — made to cut through palmas and a dancer's feet, and to forgive the working player everything a long night asks.
Lorenzo bends her cypress on the hot iron and keeps her thin everywhere the old builders kept her thin. She carries a golpeador fitted in the house, and she expects to be struck — a blanca that is babied, he says, sounds like an apology.
